Are you a qualified Engineer with an interest in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)?

Join our Motorway Optimisation team and play a critical role in supporting the management of Queensland’s motorway network. The team provides policy, standards, guidance, training, and expert advice on the use of Smart Motorway Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The team also leads the development of future focused strategies for motorway management.

The Integrated Network Operations Branch plans, coordinates, and operates Queensland's multi-modal transport network to ensure the safe, efficient and reliable movement of people and goods. Our objective is connecting Queenslanders by prioritising network optimisation and resilience, leveraging innovation and technology to provide all users with safe and reliable journeys.

The Role:

This is a temporary opportunity until 27 July 2026.

As our Engineer (Traffic) you will undertake research and development to underpin road network operations technical policies, systems, standards and specifications.

You will also manage or participate in projects relating to analysis and management of intelligent transport systems in Queensland, particularly as it relates to road network operations.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

• Assist in the development of strategies and policies in relation to motorway operations, and intelligent transport systems.

• Research, evaluate and report on the application of new trends and practices suitable for use in road network operations.

• Liaise with other organisations such as the iMOVE, MARSCoE, NTRO, Austroads, academia and other State Road Authorities to inform best practice and national harmonisation.

• Assist in the development of departmental policy, guidelines, and initiatives with a specific focus on motorway operations.

• Provide specialist advice and support services to internal and external clients, including advice on technical matters appropriate for presentation to public and private bodies and in response to enquiries from the general public.

About You:

To thrive in this role, you will need to demonstrate the following:

• Knowledge of traffic flow theory, traffic engineering analysis techniques and principles and practices, and design and application of traffic control devices and their relevance to road operations.

• Ability to analyse available information in a critical and rigorous manner.

• Ability to identify and achieve greater operational efficiencies using data and leveraging technology.

• Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills coupled with the ability to articulate complex problems and solutions to a variety of audiences.

• Enthusiasm to positively influence team culture and create strong working relationships with stakeholders.

Mandatory qualifications and conditions

• A degree in civil engineering or equivalent engineering qualification which is acceptable for corporate membership of Engineers Australia.

• "C" Class Driver's licence

Desirable requirements

• Engineers' Australia membership in an area of practice related to Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) as a Graduate, Member or Affiliate member.

• Experience in motorway management, ITS or equivalent industry.
