Working with PWT offers an experience of the world different to mainstream environments through being in the beautiful, vibrant, living desert and providing a meaningful opportunity to support and work with Kiwirrkurra People to pursue self-determination and their version of a good life.

About the role

The IPA Coordinator supports Kiwirrkurra People to look after people, country and culture through:

Working closely with colleagues, Kiwirrkurra People and partners to develop and implement strategies to meet the goals identified in the Kiwirrkurra Healthy Country Plan.

Providing mentoring, leadership and coordination to a team of casual Rangers and Cultural Advisors.

In collaboration with colleagues, developing the capacity of Kiwirrkurra People to lead and manage their Ranger programs.

This role is an exceptional opportunity to work with Kiwirrkurra People and Rangers in a well-supported, high achieving and well-regarded program with established partnerships, funding and projects. This is a chance to create long-lasting ecological and social impact in a unique part of the desert. The work will be wide-ranging and challenging, and will include ranger-led research, right way fire, feral animal control, intergenerational transfer of cultural knowledge, cultural activities and more.

What we’re looking for

Experience working with Aboriginal people, listening to their needs and aspirations and responding with positive, practical operational solutions.

Demonstrated experience in Indigenous land management work; and/or strong environmental science, natural resource management, community development or practical skills relevant to Indigenous land management/Ranger activities.

Demonstrated approach of being adaptable and resilient, willing to work through complex issues with patience, care and good communication while being able to self-manage emotional and physical health in high pressure and stressful environments.

Experience in and enjoyment of remote work and multi-day camping, and the ability to effectively manage the logistics, preparation and implementation of on-country activities with multiple partner organisations.

A safety conscious attitude, including implementing safe work practices, and successfully influencing colleagues to do the same.

Effective skills and experience in administration, project management and reporting, including the ability to manage one’s time and be across multiple tasks, and computer literacy using software packages such as the Microsoft Office suite.

Demonstrated collaborative attitude, strong interpersonal skills, and able to establish relationships across different cultural perspectives, professional contexts and capabilities.

A commitment to spending at least 40 – 50% of work time in Kiwirrkurra Community/on the Kiwirrkurra Indigenous Protected Area.

Unrestricted C Class Drivers’ License, National Police Check and WA Working with Children Card (or ability to obtain)

The ideal candidate would have a deep respect for differing cultural perspectives and be respectful of differing life experiences and circumstances. You will need to have a sense of adventure, openness to new experiences and be comfortable with your worldview being challenged.

Successful IPA Coordinators bring a variety of life experience to the role. You may have undertaken similar work in another remote community, have a background in environmental science, natural resource management, or community development, or other relevant experience or qualifications. If the role sounds like you, but you have either vastly more, or not quite enough experience, please get in contact.
