Do you like taking projects from the initial idea through investigation, planning, design, approvals and ultimately delivery?

We're looking for a Design and Projects Engineer to join our skilled, responsive and committed team. This is a diverse role where you'll help develop civil infrastructure projects to "shovel-ready" status and oversee selected projects through to completion. From roads and drainage to buildings and community infrastructure, you'll have the opportunity to make a tangible impact on projects that directly benefit our communities.

This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys balancing technical design work with project management and stakeholder engagement. You'll undertake investigations, feasibility assessments, concept and detailed design, prepare project documentation, manage consultants and contractors, and provide technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle. You'll also play an important role in assessing the impacts of development proposals on Council infrastructure and ensuring projects are practical, compliant and fit for purpose.

We're seeking someone with strong civil engineering fundamentals, excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach. You'll be part of a small team with big responsibilities, where everyone contributes, communicates and works closely together to achieve great outcomes. What You'll Be Doing?

Developing civil infrastructure projects from concept through to shovel-ready status. Preparing engineering designs, specifications and project documentation. Undertaking feasibility studies, investigations and risk assessments. Managing projects through planning, procurement, construction and completion. Coordinating contractors, consultants and stakeholders. Monitoring project progress, budgets and timelines.

Preparing reports and funding acquittals for external funding agencies.

Assessing the impact of development applications on roads and infrastructure.

Providing technical advice and engineering expertise across a range of infrastructure projects.

Ensuring projects comply with relevant legislation, standards and Council requirements.

Contributing to continuous improvement and innovation across project delivery processes.

This position is located in the beautiful town of Coonabarabran, known as the Astronomy Capital of Australia, which is midway between Melbourne and Brisbane and is known for its beautiful landscape and stunning night skies. The town has medical services, excellent schools, a variety of sporting and social clubs and a thriving tourism Industry. With the nearby Warrumbungle National Park, which is also Australia’s first Dark Sky Park, there is plenty to do and explore whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation

Selection Criteria Includes

Tertiary qualifications in Civil Engineering (recognised by Engineers Australia) and significant relevant experience to this is essential.

Knowledge of industry standards and regulations (eg Austroads).

Specialist knowledge and demonstrated competence in:

Civil engineering to design, construction and rehabilitation

Engineering surveying

Geometric road design

Project management skills

Tendering and government procurement requirements

Proficiency in relevant software tools (eg AutoCAD, CivilCad and/or Advanced Road design)

Willingness to undertake ongoing training and professional development

Class C driver’s licence

WHS Construction Induction (white card) to if you don't have this, you will need to obtain it before you could start

It is a plus if you have:

Experience with 12D software

Experience working in local government or a similar environment

Experience in:

Pavement design

Simple structural designs

Drainage design (including hydraulic calculations)

Engineering assessment of development applications

Council's normal practice is to appoint at the entry salary for the grade. A higher commencing salary may be approved where an applicant can demonstrate significant directly relevant qualifications, skills and experience.
