Job Description
Role Description:
This position is process and quality focused with an emphasis on animal care, process documentation and customer services in a safe and positive manner.
This position is responsible for the daily care and comfort of the animals, adherence to shelter policies and customer interactions. As this is the primary care provider at the Shelter, this is a team position, working positively with other Animal/Customer Care Workers, volunteers and other shelter staff and volunteers to ensure best care for the animals and maximize adoptions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for all duties related to Animal Care, including:
Ensuring comfortable and clean living areas
Ensuring proper feeding
Daily exercise, socialization and training for behaviour modification
Bathing and grooming
Administering of medications
Observing for illness, stress and/or injuries
Completing all necessary documentation to ensure proper care for each animal
Transporting – Vet, petsmart adoption centre or other
Animal pick up/recue
FIV/FELV testing
Working under the direction of/supporting veterinarian staff, dog trainers and others as directed by the Shelter Manager
Cleaning and Maintenance
Daily cleaning and disinfecting animal caging, carriers, equipment
Daily cleaning of main areas, washroom and kitchen
Laundry and dishes
General shelter maintenance and upkeep including grounds
Cleaning Shelter vehicle
Duties will also include assisting with basic upkeep of shelter facilities, indoor and outdoor
Other cleaning and maintenance as required
Administration and Customer Service
Completes proper and comprehensive documentation as per Shelter Policies and Procedures including :
Animal intake – Petpoint data entry, phone documentation
Adoption application completeion and processing
Animal outtake
Complaint call documentation
Daily animal care logs
Cash handling – receipts, counts
Responds to questions from general public regarding animals available, complaint concerns, shelter policies in a positive and accurate manner, in line with the Code of Conduct
Promotion of adoptable animals at the shelter, the Petsmart Adoption Centre and various adoption promotion events
Ensures appropriate documentation of phone, email and in person inquiries
Keeps Lost and Found registry current
Maintains inventory of regularly used items at the reception desk and in the shelter
Other duties as required
