Job Description: The Filson Historical Society (FHS), one of the nations oldest and most distinguished historical institutions, seeks qualified candidates for the position of President and Chief Executive Officer. The mission of The Filson Historical Society is to collect, preserve, and tell the significant stories of Kentucky and Ohio Valley history and culture. Founded in 1884 in Louisville, Kentucky, and named in honor of 18th-century historian John Filson, the FHS has acquired a large and comprehensive collection of manuscripts, documents, books, maps, museum objects, artwork, and photographs relating to the history of the Ohio Valley, Louisville, and Kentucky. Just as important, the FHS publishes a quarterly journal, produces exhibitions, conducts lectures, conferences and other public events, offers a fellows program for scholars and graduate students, and offers a variety of educational programs for schools. The President and CEO of the FHS is its primary leader and manager. He/she is charged with leading the staff and working with the Board of Directors in fulfilling the FHS vision and mission and in following its values of openness, accessibility and dedication to scholarship and excellence. He/she will help establish its strategic goals and then ensure that each is completed successfully. The FHS has embarked on a major campus expansion project, which includes a new 20,000 square foot building and the renovation of the organizations historic Ferguson Mansion and its Carriage House. The expansion and renovation will be completed in the spring of 2016. This position reports to the Board of Directors.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Manage, motivate, and guide the staff and volunteers, With the Board, develop the organizations strategic goals, recommend actionable responses in order to achieve those goals, and lead the organization to accomplish those goals Lead and supervise all areas of the FHS, including collections, education, programs, scholarship, development, customer relations, administration, finance, technology, and facilities expansion and use. Engage vigorously and effectively in fundraising and development, including capital campaigns, membership and annual fund initiatives, and specific grant proposals. Raise the profile of the FHS by actively and effectively representing and promoting it in the community and region to a broad range of constituencies and customers, Prepare the annual budget and work closely with the Finance Committee Oversee collections, programs, and services, and use, where appropriate, innovative and creative approaches to expand the FHS activities and reach throughout the community, region and nation.

DESIRED PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: Education: Advanced degree in history or a field directly relevant to the responsibilities of President and CEO and the mission of the FHS Experience: Relevant executive experience working with a board and leading a staff; minimum of eight years of successful and progressively responsible, executive experience Skills: Exceptional abilities in communications, management, team-building, motivation, and fundraising Ability to inspire and work comfortably and effectively with a variety of people.
