Job description
One of Africa\'s largest media company\'s is seeking an editor in chief for their various online portals.
Key responsibilities
• Manage a web portal with multiple verticals.
• Manage an editorial team, budget, content suppliers and partner relationships.
• Manage internal relationships with sales team and advertising operations.
• Drive a unique content and editorial strategy.
• Take ownership of the product and evangelize it both inside the business and in the South African media landscape.
• Be the voice of the portal in terms of PR and marketing
Requirements
• Tertiary qualification in Journalism
• At least five to ten years managing a newsroom
• Strong editorial track record
• A proven track record of publishing success, ideally digital, but print will not be discounted
• Proven ability to manage a large team
• Proven ability to manage an editorial budget
• A thorough understanding of digital publishing, CMS and analytics tools as well as website monetization
• Ensure consistency of editorial voice across multiple content verticals
• Ensure compliance with copyright, libel and media law
• Have a track record of editorial excellence, showing the ability to grow audience and revenue
• The ability to manage a large team in terms of workflow, outputs and quality
• Deep understanding of South African media law
• Full grasp of SEO principles and how to drive these both technically and editorially
• Ability to use analytics tools and the insight to drive strategy based on statistics
• Understanding of the 24 hour news cycle and ability to drive quality reporting in all fields
• A network of contacts, freelancers, interview subjects and suppliers
• Creative, original thinker, unafraid to buck trends, take risks and try new strategies
• Comfortable conducting interviews, presenting strategy, doing public speaking and being an ambassador for the brand.
• Ability to balance short-term success with long-term strategy.
• Daily targets need to be seen in terms of long-term strategic imperatives.
