Skill Requirements:
Education: Completion of college/CEGEP/vocational or technical training
Credentials (certificates, licences, memberships, courses, etc.): Welder Trade Certification, 1st Period Apprentice, 2nd Period Apprentice, 3rd Period Apprentice, 4th Period Apprentice, Welder Red Seal Endorsement, Canadian Welding Bureau Certification, WHMIS Certificate
Experience: 3 years to less than 5 years
Major Work Area: Construction, Maintenance/repair, New fabrication
Type of Establishment/Work Setting Experience: Commercial, Institutional
Area of Specialization: Structural construction, Ornamental work, Fencing, balconies, stairs and railings
Welding Techniques: Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), Flux core arc welding (FCAW)
Type of Machine Experience: Gas welding machines, Arc welding machines
Welding Positions: All positions
Materials: Steel, iron and heavy metals
Weight Handling: Up to 45 kg (100 lbs)
Specific Skills: Operate manual or semi-automatic, fully automated welding equipment, Operate manual or semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment, Operate hoisting and lifting equipment
Additional Skills: Instruct apprentices, Read and interpret welding blueprints, drawings specifications, manuals and processes
Security and Safety: Basic security clearance, Drug test
Own Tools/Equipment: Steel-toed safety boots, Face shield, Welding helmet
Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities: Fast-paced environment, Repetitive tasks, Physically demanding, Manual dexterity, Attention to detail, Hand-eye co-ordination, Standing for extended periods
