Position Details
The University of Washington Bothell (UWB), School of STEM, Division of Engineering and Mathematics seeks a dynamic educator to teach solid mechanics, 3-D Modeling and Design, and Computational Physical Modeling.  The appointment will be made at the Senior Lecturer rank.  The initial term of appointment for this full-time, nine-month renewable position will be September 16, 2014 through June 15, 2017.  All university faculty engage in teaching, research and service.
With an anticipated launch in fall 2014, our Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering emphasizes hands-on design, collaborative problem solving, and ethical practice in a diverse and global society.  Preference will be given to candidates whose record of teaching and scholarship resonates with the institutional objectives of situating mechanical engineering in the larger societal context, tackling ethical implications, building educational synergy with the electrical engineering program, and forging educational connections across disciplines inside and outside of engineering.
Successful candidates for appointment at the rank of Senior Lecturer will have an earned Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and have at least three years’ teaching experience in standard mechanical engineering courses such as statics, deformable bodies, and computational and 3-D modeling.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach the above courses, in addition to teaching elective courses in the candidate’s field of expertise, in a newly established undergraduate mechanical engineering major.  Additional requirements include strong oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to develop and use advanced teaching methods to enhance learning and improve access to education, and an ability to use instructional strategies designed for diverse populations and learning styles.  Preference will be given to candidates with experience in excess of the three-year minimum and a demonstrated ability to contribute broadly to the new mechanical engineering major at UWB.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The School of STEM offers seven undergraduate degrees and two graduate degrees within its four Divisions of Biological Sciences, Computing and Software Systems, Engineering and Mathematics, and Physical Sciences.   Interactive Media Design and Mathematics degrees were launched in Autumn 2013, a degree in Chemistry is planned to begin in the Fall of 2014 and degrees in Physics, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Engineering are planned for initiation during the next two to four years. We also offer master’s degrees in Computer Science and Software Engineering, a master’s degree in Cyber Security Engineering beginning fall 2013, and plan to offer a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering beginning fall 2014. Our present laboratory facilities will be augmented in Autumn 2014 by the new 74,000 square-foot Science and Academic Building, which will include eleven new science and engineering laboratories.
