BreastScreen Queensland, Cairns Service provides a free population-based mammography screening and assessment service to women over 40 years of age. The service operates within the framework of the BreastScreen Australia and the BreastScreen Queensland programs and aims to achieve significant reductions in morbidity and mortality from breast cancer through early detection of the disease. The catchment area includes Cairns, Cassowary Coast, Atherton Tablelands, Gulf communities, Cape York, the Torres Strait, and the Northern Peninsula, and part of the Townsville Health Service, covering an area of approximately 380,000 square kilometres. The service is provided at a freestanding independent screening and assessment unit in Cairns and from two mobile screening units, which provide a screening service to women in rural and remote areas of Far North Queensland.

Purpose of the Role: The medical officer is part of a multi-disciplinary team that includes radiologists, surgeons, pathologists, radiographers, nurses, and administration staff. The medical officer contributes to the multidisciplinary assessment of clients recalled from screening for further assessment with clinical history and examination of clients, collaborative review of imaging, and performance of clinical procedures such as fine needle aspiration and core biopsy. Other duties include counselling clients, liaising with general practitioners and treatment teams, and data collation and coding for reporting. This role reports to the Medical Director, BreastScreen Cairns Service.
