Genomics WA (GWA) is seeking an enthusiastic bioinformatician to lead the development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) workflows in analyzing complex and noisy datasets to discover new biological insights. You’ll be pivotal in shaping our ML strategy and pushing the boundaries of genomic analyses. This position is offered on a full-time maximum-term contract for three (3) years, located at our state-of-the-art medical research facilities in Nedlands.
About this role
As a bioinformatician–machine learning/AI specialist, you’ll work within the Genomics WA Bioinformatics team to develop ML algorithms and applications for genomics datasets and support service delivery across clinical and research applications. This includes client engagement, analysis of spatial transcriptomics and other complex multimodal datasets, deep learning model development, and contribution to future bioinformatics infrastructure.
The key responsibilities of this role include:
Design, evaluate and deliver ML/AI-based bioinformatics analyses and pipelines
Analyse large-scale, multimodal genomics datasets
Support day to day operations of the Genomics Bioinformatics Team
Collaborate with researchers to develop tailored project plans and solutions
Train internal teams and deliver external education sessions in ML applications
Assist in planning GWA’s future bioinformatics and IT capability
Ensure compliance with NATA standards as part of our accredited facility
To be successful in this role, you’ll have:
Master’s or PhD in Bioinformatics, Machine Learning, Data Science or similar
Demonstrated experience developing and applying ML to biological or big data
Strong proficiency in Python, R, bash and Linux HPC environments
Familiarity with tools like Scikit-learn, TensorFlow and statistical modelling
Excellent communication and visualisation skills
A passion for scientific innovation and collaborative research
