About this opportunity: Under the support and direction of the Coordinator, Family Services the Peer Program Worker role supports the aims and functions of the program by facilitating carer intake, 1-2-1 support, individual/family respite needs, and the delivery of peer education programs and group activities.

The Peer Program Worker will share their experience of caring for someone with a mental illness in order to assist families to better understand the participant perspective and improve outcomes for themselves. In addition, the Peer Program Worker will be trained to facilitate peer led education programs for families caring for someone with a mental illness.

Participation of people with a lived experience of mental illness is an important element of the way in which MI Fellowship provides services. Utilising the MI Fellowship’s Lived Experience Workforce Framework, the Peer Program Worker will provide support and will act as a positive role model for families and carers.

Key skills & qualities: To be successful in this role, you will possess the following key skills: A lived experience of caring for someone with a mental illness, Qualifications in social science or similar discipline or relevant experience, Ability and commitment to work with consumers, carers, health workers, the community and community organizations, An understanding of the biopsychosocial model of mental health, Demonstrated experience and skills in working within programs for  people with a mental illness or their carers, Ability to advocate on behalf of carers for service improvement and/or ability to engage with others involved in this work, Ability to build effective partnerships with carer networks and those managing service delivery in the organisation and the community, Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, A current and valid Driver’s Licence and the ability to undertake some travel, A satisfactory Police Records Check and current Working with Children Check, To apply please send a copy of your resume and covering letter, outlining your skills, experience and suitability for this role
