Casual/Vacation. $65,642–$71,136 per year (+ shiftwork penalties). The first step is seeking mentors to join our team. First Step is a 100% Aboriginal-owned company based in Darwin and servicing the Greater Darwin Region within the Northern Territory. First Step Development Enterprises offers a range of programs, from supported accommodation services to providing training and employment pathways through life skills, mentoring, kinship, leadership, and cultural connection.

Under the direction of the Service Manager, you will work alongside a team to support young people in all aspects of their wellbeing and engagement. This will include emerging a professional relationship with the individuals to develop life skills, family support, social and emotional support, and community engagement. This role requires flexibility with rotating shifts of up to 12 hours to provide supported accommodation services for young people, 24 hours per day/7 days a week, which includes nights and weekends.

Key Selection Criteria: Have a minimum Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention (Residential and OoHC) or Diploma in youth, community, or human services or willingness to obtain with 18 months of employment. For Aboriginal Personnel, a qualification is desirable; alternatively, three (3) years’ relevant experience and a positive reference validating your skills, knowledge, and performance will also be acceptable. Experience in working with young people who are either at-risk of involvement in the youth justice system or currently engaged in the youth justice system.

Demonstrated knowledge of youth-focused practice frameworks such as therapeutic, strengths-based, or trauma-informed practice.

Highly developed communication skills include relationship building, problem solving and report writing. Pride yourself on your ability to motivate and advocate to achieve outcomes for young people. Understanding the requirements in delivering services, including risk factors, protective factors, support, and developmental needs. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including professional record-keeping, active listening, negotiation, and promoting respectful and solution-focused outcomes. Demonstrated ability to collaborate, listen, motivate, and support young people to enable change and engagement in the service and within their life.

Experience in managing household duties and being able to assist young people in tasks such as cooking, cleaning and laundry.

Competency in using Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook and SharePoint, and the capacity to write effectively and maintain accurate confidential case notes, records and files. Demonstrated ability to manage crisis situations and make decisions under pressure.

Further Information: The applicant will be required to hold a current Working with Children Clearance notice, also known as an Ochre Card. Be willing to undergo a criminal history check (a criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is a relevant criminal history). Hold a current C Class Northern Territory Driver’s Licence. Hold a current First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain one.
