Sales Manager
Ausbeds Pty Ltd
Marrickville, Sydney NSW
Management (Sales)
Full time
$100,000 – $130,000 per year
My business is growing, and I'd love someone to come and help. Instead of boring you with corporate speak I'll tell you what a normal day in the life (for you) at ausbeds looks like.
10am - start
You'll turn up and as you are turning the computer on, you'll get a phonecall which could be one of a ten ish possible scenarios. Most likely it's someone that's read about ausbeds on reddit and wants to know more. As you are explaining what you know on the phone, someone else will arrive, and you'll politely tell them to go and have a laydown on the mattresses and you'll be with them in a minute. They like the casual approach.
10:15am
You'll get off the call and go and hang out in the showroom with some people that have probably read about ausbeds online, or have seen some videos, or read about us on forumes. They are mostly sold already, you will tell them how we do things. I have a very refined (and basic) script for this. afer this, they'll want time to get aquainted with the product.
You'll tell them to take their time and you'll be at the desk as you will be very concerned with the fact that these people will want to take some time without being hassled. It's very important that they are left to the product without interference.
After between 5 to 15 minutes, they'll have questions, they will let you know by hovering around the door near the desk or they may even just yell out. When they do this, you will be waiting and ready. At this time you will do your absolute best to give them the very best of service. What's the best of service? Easy, you will explain to them the potential downfalls of mattress ownership and how ausbeds has overcome each stage of matress ownership. Again, I have a script for this.
You'll work 10am-2pm on saturday and sundays, it's possible that the 2pm will go to 4pm as sometimes it's busy on the weekends. monday to wednesdays 10-6pm. However you will be very fairly compensated on weekends as I understand that weekends are, well weekends. You will have thurdays and fridays off.
On saturdays you will have an assistant to help. As it gets busier you will have more access to assistants as this seems to be a growing business. The work environment is changing fairly rapidly as we get busier leading to more oppurtnity. Basically, as we get busier you will be compensated. The bonuses you get will be tied to overall sales for the week. This will incentivise you to help the customers, rather than land the sale.
Commission
My belief is that you should be rewarded for increased sales of the business. However you will under no circumstances pressure the customer into the sale. It's a fine line. I have built a reputation of no pressure sales. The only pressure you will apply is to helping the customer understand the long term value of ownership of the ausbeds mattress. This is easy, as I have manufactured this in house.
When the customer fully understands how the system works, they may seem sold, they may look awkward. If you are an expereinced sales person, you will know this point of the interaction very well. You may be trained to hard sell here. You will not hard sell at this point.
Instead, you will give them 3 options, you will say, something along the lines of "perhaps you would like me to email you what we have been speaking about". (grab details and send quote, quote will have a payment method)
Sometimes they will say "nah, I'll order online", sometimes they'll say, "ok, I'll have a quote", and sometimes they'll say "I just want to get this outta the way, lets pay". If they want to pay, you'll be able to arrange the delivery, which we can usually do within 2 days. We make them on site. We have people on site to deliver.
I need someone who can master this workflow, this is what I do everyday. The business is growing and for the right person, this job will be a pleasure. I enjoy taking people through this process, however I am also overlooking marketing, manufacturing, sewing, logistics, and all of the responsibilities of business ownership. Therefore I am looking for somebody that is ready to be my eyes and ears on the floor.
I have a team of 7 at the moment. On any given day there is usually 2-5 people on site as we are open 7 days.
Is the above everything?
No, but it's the most important stuff. People order from bris and melb, you have to chat to my logistics people. Very small and casual team. everyones super cool. The wheels are greased. Its not that hard.
If it's so easy, what's the catch?
The devil is in the details, if you write up an invoice, and you get a single digit wrong, you may send the wrong mattress to brisbane. This can cost me $1000, a crapload of fixing, and a possible bad review. I don't get bad reviews. You must have a very keen eye for detail.
Basically, you must be an amazing communicator. In saying this, you don't need to have grown up in australia. You just need to be an exceptional communicator. I have had non australians do this role incredibly well. I had someone that used to connect jobs for builders in london, they were incredible at this job. This job does not require a sales person. It requires a problem solver. Someone who can "get stuff done".
What's the company culture?
I don't believe in company culture, I believe that everyone comes to work to get paid. That's why I come to work. Paradoxically, that is my company culture. It's perfectly ok at ausbeds to worry about your pay and to talk about your pay. I always talk about the sales for the week, If the biz is doing well, if it's busier, you will get more dolla dolla bills y'all. Pay is an open discussion.
I just checked and I have now had 9 beers so by my calculation, 9 beers minus the 5 that I started with is 4 beers. I put 4 beers and 4 hours into this job ad, if you write me a chatgpt response in 7 seconds I will not read it. I know the difference In this email you may write me whatever the hell you want, tell me where you are at, tell me why this might work for you. Continue the conversation.
NOTE: Never make payment to any employer, person, company, contractor or agency to get hired for a Job.
I suggest if you want me to consider you, you may be inclined to send me an email to karl@ausbeds.com.au
